Major 7.0 earthquake strikes central Peru

A major 7.0-magnitude earthquake has struck central Peru.

The quake hit 42 kilometres east-northeast of Tambo at a depth of 58.9 kilometers, the US Geological Survey said.

There are no immediate reports of damage or injuries and it's believed there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii.

It follows earthquakes in California and Iceland over the past 12 hours.

A state of emergency was declared in Northern California overnight after a 6.0-magnitude quake rattled residents and caused widespread damage in the scenic Napa valley wine region.

Roughly 120 people were injured, three seriously, and a number of fires were ignited.

It was the largest quake to strike the region in 25 years.

While Icelandic authorities registered a 5.3-magnitude quake at the Bardarbunga volcano in the country’s south east on Sunday, the strongest since activity increased a week ago.
