Two teens who hailed from the same town in Mozambique have discovered they were adopted into families in the same US town as young boys.

Friends Kelvin Lewis and Afonso Slater were orphaned when their parents died of AIDS.

When they were both 10, they were separately adopted by families living in Gilbert, Arizona – but the boys never knew they ended up in the same town, until their families figured it out and organised a surprise reunion.

The now 18-year-olds told People Magazine their friendship was meant to last.

“The only way this makes sense to me is that there was a higher plan for our friendship to last,” Mr Slater said.

“I needed Kelvin back in Mozambique, because we relied on each other for comfort.”
