Only 'miracle' would have saved Chris Lane, doctor says

A forensic pathologist has said only a "miracle" would have saved gunned-down Australian Chris Lane as he lay dying from a bullet wound, as the prosecution rests its case in his murder trial.

Dr Inis Yacoub, who performed the autopsy on Lane, was the final witness called by district attorney Jason Hicks in the Stephens County District Court in Duncan, Oklahoma overnight.

When asked if the 22-year-old baseballer could have survived with immediate treatment, she replied, "Apart from a miracle, no."

Chancey Luna, 17, stands charged with first-degree murder after shooting Lane in the back with a .22 calibre revolver as the Melbourne-raised athlete was jogging along a Duncan street in 2013.

On the stand, Dr Yocoub described how the bullet hit Lane's rib, struck both lungs and damaged the pulmonary artery and aorta, causing massive blood loss.

Meanwhile, a detective says search of the Ford Focus allegedly used in the drive-by shooting found more than 100 bullets hidden in the engine.

Berry made the surprise admission early in the proceedings that Luna pulled the trigger on the gun, but said the teenager was reckless and only wanted to scare Lane.

The jury is made up of seven men, five women and one alternate male juror.

If guilty, Luna could be jailed for the rest of his life without the prospect of parole.
