A note with a message about a bomb has been found on a Qantas plane and led to the evacuation of Queenstown Airport this afternoon.

Police said a cleaner found the message on board the empty plane while it was sitting on the tarmac at around 3pm (local time).

The note was found on board Qantas flight QF121 from Sydney, stuff.co.nz reports.

There were no passengers on the aircraft when the note was discovered.

Queenstown police said aviation security and police found no evidence of an explosive on board.

A search of baggage on the aircraft and the airport terminal also failed to locate any explosives.

The airport has since reopened but the shutdown is expected to cause major delays.

No passengers were on board, and no injuries have been reported.
