No reports of Australians killed or seriously injured in Bangkok bombing

Australian consular officials have received no reports of any Australians were killed or seriously injured in the deadly Bangkok bomb blast, Foreign Minister Julie Bishop has confirmed.

Thai authorities are still trying to piece together the full extent of yesterday’s bombing, but believe the death toll stands at 22, with more than 100 injured.

Many of those killed in the bomb blast outside a Hindu temple in the city’s central commercial district are believed to be locals, while Hong Kong authorities have claimed at least two Hong Kong residents have died.

Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Australian Ambassador to Bangkok are working with Thai officials, but Foreign Minister Julie Bishop today released a statement saying they do not believe any Australians were killed in the bombing.

“There is no evidence at this stage that Australian nationals are among the deceased or seriously injured,” Ms Bishop’s statement read.

“The thoughts of all Australians are with the injured and the families of those who have lost their lives through this dreadful act.

“Australian strongly condemns the bombing.”

She said Australian authorities would continue to “liaise closely” with the Thai government, military and police and “will work to strengthen our bilateral and regional counter-terrorism cooperation”.
