NZ trainer killed in horse float accident

Trainer Steve Anderton has died after an accident at his stables, New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing has confirmed.

"The racing community is reeling following the passing in Dunedin Hospital of the respected and popular Wingatui trainer Steve Anderton," a statement on the governing body's website said.

One of the most prominent trainers at Wingatui, near Dunedin, Anderton was found by colleagues trapped under a horse truck ramp early on Monday.

He was unloading horses when he was apparently struck in the head by the float door after a hydraulic failure.

The website said Anderton, 44, died in Dunedin Hospital's intensive care unit on Tuesday.

Anderton is from one of the most prominent thoroughbred racing families in Dunedin. Three generations of the family have been leaders in racehorse training and breeding in the region.

Among his best horses was The Jewel, who he trained with his father Hec to win the 1000 Guineas in 2003, the Waikato International in 2005 and the 2003 Doomben Roses.

His current team included The Diamond One, winner of the Group Three White Robe Lodge Handicap at Wingatui last year.
