Falling tree narrowly misses New Zealand police

Two New Zealand policemen narrowly avoided being crushed by a tree while clearing fallen branches from the country's North Island this week.

Dashcam footage of the near-miss shows the pair dragging a large branch from the road moments before the tree comes down with a crunching thud.

With only seconds to act, the quick-thinking duo waste no time leaping out of its path.

Not so lucky, however, was their squad car, which suffered some damage to its bonnet.

The incident comes as wild weather continues to lash parts of North and South Island, with destructive winds tearing off roofs and roads closed due to flooding.

The North Island was set for a second drenching today.

The MetService issued a thunderstorm watch for Coromandel down to Taupo, with the worst to hit this afternoon.
