An international report compiled by a US environment body claims 2014 was the warmest year ever recorded on Earth.

The annual State of the Climate report from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association showed the planet was continuing to warm through last year, the government body claimed.

The report drew on data collected from 413 scientists in 58 countries.

"The variety of indicators shows us how our climate is changing, not just in temperature but from the depths of the oceans to the outer atmosphere," NOAA's Thomas Karl said.

The report has claimed sea temperature, land temperature and sea levels all reached record highs around the Earth last year.

It was Australia's third-warmest year on record and Europe's warmest.

Tropical cyclones also occurred in high numbers, with 91 storms throughout 2014.

Sea ice levels in the Arctic remained low, however, it was the third consecutive year for record high sea ice levels at the Antarctic.
