New Jersey police have confirmed two crew members were killed in a jet crash near Teterboro Airport.

Footage from the scene showed thick black smoke erupting from the small plane wreckage.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the Learjet 35 was travelling from Philadelphia International Airport to Teterboro Airport when it crashed at 3.30pm local time (5.30am AEST).

There were no passengers on board.

Joe Orlando, a spokesman for the Borough of Carlstadt, told NBC News the plane hit at least three properties.

"Parts of the plane are laying in the garage," Mr Orlando said.

"I can see the engines, part of the fuselage. There's just melted cars all over the place in our yard."
