Clinton campaign reportedly ‘hacked’ in cyber-attack on Democrats

The computer network used by Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s campaign has been hacked, Reuters reports.

The latest hack follows two data breaches at the Democratic National Committee (DNC) in mid-June that resulted in a leak of party emails, however it is not clear whether Russian hackers are behind the latest attack.

Ms Clinton’s party blamed Moscow for the initial breaches, which revealed how party leaders sought to undermine her potential rival Bernie Sanders.

The FBI confirmed it was investigating the matter, and would “take seriously any allegations of intrusions”.

“[The FBI] is aware of media reporting on cyber intrusions  involving multiple political entities, and is working to determine the accuracy, nature and scope of these matters,” the statement read.

Last week, the previous leak led to the resignation of DNC chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz before the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, and sparked protests at the convention.

The previously leaked emails were made public by WikiLeaks and the Kremlin has labelled accusations that it was behind the hack as absurd.

US President Barack Obama has refused to rule out that Russia is trying to sway the US election in favour of Donald Trump.

"The investigation is ongoing. Based on the information we have to date, we've been advised by investigators that this is similar to other recent incidents, including the DNC breach," national press secretary Meredith Kelly said in an earlier statement.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee was working to enhance its network security and "cooperating with the federal law enforcement with respect to their ongoing investigation," she said.

When asked if the two breaches were connected, White House spokesman Eric Schultz referred reporters to the FBI.

"Obviously, they've confirmed an investigation into the intrusion at the DNC," he said.

"So if there are connected events that they would look at, that would be part of their investigation.

"Obviously, we expect that investigation to be thorough and deliberate, and to look at all the facts and look at all the fast where they lead."

US Secretary of State John Kerry raised the DNC hack with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in Laos earlier this week.

"Secretary Kerry has noted that we've been concerned about Russia's activity in this space for quite some time," Mr Schultz said.

"I suspect that won't be the last time they have a conversation about this."
