Navy rams Greenpeace boat, breaks woman's leg

Greenpeace has released dramatic video showing Spanish navy vessel repeatedly ramming into their boat during a protest against oil exploration near the Canary Islands.

The environmental activists say four of their members were injured during the clash, with a 23-year-old woman breaking her leg after falling overboard.

Video of the standoff, which happened over the weekend, shows a Greenpeace speed boat heading towards the oil exploration vessel, the Rowan Renaissance, before Spanish launches repeatedly ram it.

Greenpeace said it was making a peaceful protest but the navy has disputed their version of events.

The navy said that it had sent boats from one of its warships nearby to stop activists from boarding the Rowan Renaissance.

The woman with the broken leg was airlifted to a hospital in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria by a helicopter, the navy said.

Greenpeace said it was forced to retreat a few miles to keep its activists safe.
