NASA tracks three powerful hurricanes

NASA has filmed three powerful hurricanes moving across the Earth from the International Space Station.

Hurricanes Madeline and Lester in the Pacific region currently pose a threat to Hawaii while Hurricane Gaston continues to move across the Atlantic Ocean.

If either Madeline or Lester make landfall on Hawaii it would be the first time a hurricane has hit the Big Island since 1949, when meteorologists began record keeping.

The time-lapse footage taken from 400km above on August 30 clearly shows the three powerful storms slowly spiralling across the planet.

The National Weather Service issued a hurricane warning for the Big Island with a timeframe of 36 hours until either storm potentially hits.

The strongest hurricane in the video is Gaston which has been classified a Category 3 with wind speeds of more than 190km/h.

Not shown in the clip is Typhoon Lionrock which has killed at least 11 people in Japan in the past day.

Forecasters are also tracking another storm with cyclonic properties off the Gulf of Mexico which could threaten the Florida coast if conditions intensify.
