NASA releases first ever audio from Mars

For the first time in history, audio recordings from Mars have been released by NASA.

Captured by space rover Perseverance and released on Soundcloud, listeners can hear wind blowing and laser shots fired by the rover, which analyse the surface of objects in its path.

"This recording was made by the SuperCam instrument on NASA's Perseverance Mars rover on February 19, 2021, just about 18 hours after landing on the mission's first sol or Martian day," NASA wrote on Soundcloud.

"The rover's mast, holding the microphone, was still stowed on Perseverance's deck, and so the sound is muffled.

"Just a little wind can be heard.

"The sounds of 30 (laser) impacts are heard, some slightly louder than others.

"Variations in the intensity of the zapping sounds will provide information on the physical structure of the targets, such as its relative hardness or the presence of weathering coatings."

Perseverance made history last month when it successfully landed on the Red Planet, following a seven-month orbit through space and a nerve-wracking seven-minute landing.

The SUV-sized spacecraft will spend its first two years on the planet searching for signs of ancient microbial life, stashing away samples of its findings on Mars' surface.

A future mission will land on the planet in 2026 to collect the 40 samples.

They will then be put on a rocket that will blast them into orbit where they will be transferred onto a spacecraft that will bring them back to earth.

Scientists believe that Mars may have been a hospitable environment for life some 3.5 million years ago, when it's atmosphere was warmer and wetter.

Perseverance is the fifth rover NASA has successfully landed on Mars since 1997.
