Dedicated musician plays saxophone while a team of surgeons operate on his brain

Spanish musician Carlos Aguilera has played the saxophone during his own 12-hour brain surgery to remove a tumour.

Video shows the doctors at Malaga Regional Hospital hand the instrument to the 27-year-old on the operating table.

He played a few bars of the jazz classic “Misty” as a team of 16 surgeons continued the delicate operation.

Doctors had chosen to keep Mr Aguilera awake during the surgery so they could be sure the procedure was not affecting his brain function including speech, hearing and movement.

When Mr Aguilera was diagnosed with a brain tumour he feared that the operation would damage his ability to read or play music again.

"Two months ago, I was on the operating table and now I have a life ahead,” he told local news site La Opinion de Malaga.

"I've been born again."
