One dead, nine injured after shooting in New Orleans
Sheer panic has gripped New Orleans’ famous Bourbon Street after a deadly shooting claimed the life of one person and another nine were injured.
Video filmed after the shooting shows the chaos and fear of what are usually revellers in the party district, after a gunman opened fire about 1.30am local time (7.30pm AEDT).
Glean Williams, 24, said he was selling hats on the corner of Bourbon and Canal streets when the shooting started.
"It was panic. Everybody started running," he said. "People getting run over, stepped on, knocked over."
Ronnie Buendia, 25, told The Times-Picayune he heard gun shots.
"Everybody was running into the garage trying to get away," he said.
Superintendent Michael Harrison told reporters 30 police officers were already in the area conducting patrols after the earlier Bayou Classic college football game.
"Ten victims were shot ranging from ages 20 to 37, two females, eight males, one of whom has expired at the hospital," Supt Harrison said.
He said two men were arrested at the scene, including one of the victims, for illegally carrying a firearm.
"This is not something that should have happened. This is the wrong place to bring firearms, we made that clear," Supt Harrison said.
He said police were still investigating whether either of the firearms seized from the two men were discharged at the scene.
