The 10 most expensive countries in the world for beer
The alcohol excise - or "beer tax" - in Australia increased again this month, pushing the cost of a pint up yet further.
The repeated tax hikes, which occur in February and August, in line with inflation, have led to calls for a reprieve from industry representatives, who say the government is pushing the price of a pint beyond the reach of the average Australian.
But new research from Finder has revealed Australia isn't even in the top 10 countries for beer prices around the world.
Finder calculated the average price of a pint of beer in the most populated city of every country they surveyed.
Australia - represented by Sydney - clocked in at an average of $11, which put us at number 21.
The following are the 10 countries in the world that topped the list.
10. Singapore, Singapore
A pint of beer in Singapore costs an average of $12.78.
9. Zurich, Switzerland
Switzerland's Zurich sells beer at an average of $13.02 a pint.
8. Beirut, Lebanon
A pint in the Lebanese capital costs an average of $13.48.
7. New York City, USA
The US, as represented by bustling New York City, came in at seventh with an average beer price of $13.83 a pint.
6. Oslo, Norway
Scandinavian countries are known for their strong social welfare and their high cost of living, with beer in Oslo costing an average of $14.75 a pint.
5. Manama, Bahrain
Manama in Bahrain sells beer at an average of $14.91 a pint.
4. Muscat, Oman
People looking to wet their whistle in Muscat will have to fork over $15.25 a pint.
3. Reykjavik, Iceland
Picturesque Reykjavik in Iceland, where beer costs an average of $15.47 a pint.
2. Dubai, United Arab Emirates
A centre of high-priced tourism, the beer matches at $18.15 a pint.
