A wild moose has picked an unlikely spot to become a new mum by giving birth in a carpark outside an Alaskan hardware store.

Local shoppers in Anchorage were stunned when the heavily pregnant beast went into labour as they walked to their cars.

“I’ve been here (Alaska) 50 years. This is unbelievable, in a parking lot,” one astonished onlooker told Fox News of seeing the cow and calf sitting in the shade in front of an SUV.

The adult moose caused traffic to be blocked to the carpark for hours, with bystanders happily watching and waiting for the birth of its calf.

“Seeing the way she’s been acting — not so much angry, but you can tell she’s just kind of like a little scared and timid and doesn’t know what to think of everything, because everybody has been showing up around the area,” shopper Katherine Warren said.

“It is exciting, it’s a new life, you know, so it’s very exciting, but at the other end, she needs her privacy.”

Despite wildlife officials standing by, the moose and its calf later wandered off through the parking lot.
