WATCH: Earth-shaking moment volcano erupts in Mexico

Locals in Mexico City have described how they felt the ground rumble before the dramatic eruption of the Popocatepetl volcano 70km outside of their town.

Located in central Mexico, the volcano erupted suddenly late Monday morning local time.

Within seconds the volcanic plume reached four kilometres in the air, with ash falling on a number of nearby towns.
