A massive fire has broken out inside a cathedral in New York, engulfing the historic building in flames and blankets of smoke.

Firefighters are on the scene of the three-alarm blaze inside the Serbian Orthodox Cathedral of St. Sava on West 25th Street, Manhattan, which started around 7pm local time.

Footage on social media shows an inferno consuming the cathedral, with bright orange flames tearing through the windows and roof.
