Man turns himself in after footage of cyclist attack goes viral

A van driver has turned himself in to London police after being shamed around the world for allegedly attacking a cyclist who he had just cut off.

Footage from a helmet-mounted camera shows the cyclist riding along a busy road in the east London suburb of Hornchurch when he is overtaken by a white van.

As the traffic slows for an intersection, the cyclist looks into the van's window before shouting to the two men inside: "Get off the phone, you muppet."

The van turns sharply into the path of the cyclist, sending him crashing to the ground.

After the van driver and cyclist swear at each other, the driver kicks and shoves the rider before punching him, causing him to fall again.

The force of the punch also knocked the camera from the man's bike helmet, The Guardian reports.

Essex Police said a man had turned himself into a local police station overnight after the video circulated online.

The incident appears to have occurred in early December, according to the time stamp on the rider's helmet camera.

London's Evening Standard newspaper said the driver's company, which was identifiable by its logo seen on the white van in the video, had been "bombarded with angry calls and messages including one alleged death threat".

"The matter has been passed to the Met police to investigate," an Essex Police spokeswoman said.

It is not known if the man will be charged, though police have also appealed for the cyclist to come forward.
