Man comforted young Sydney victim amid bomb carnage

A survivor of the Barcelona attacks has told how he comforted a dying boy amid the carnage, believed to be Sydney seven-year-old Julian Cadman.

British man Harry Athwal, 44, told ITV's Good Morning Britain show how he noticed a young boy lying in the road and ran to support him.

Mr Athwal said he has a son aged eight and was drawn to help the young victim.

"I was instantly drawn to that child," Harry explained to host Kate Garraway.

"I checked for a pulse, he didn’t have a pulse. I stroked his hair to see if I could comfort him," he added.

Police directed him to leave amid fears the terrorists may return, but Mr Athwal refused to leave the boy’s side.

He said the experience will stay with him until his "dying day".

Julian Cadman, a pupil at St Bernadette’s Primary School, Lalor Park, was officially identified on the weekend as one of the 14 people killed in the terrorist attacks.

Mr Athwal declared that the threat of a new form of terrorism required the everyday person to respond.

He said: "We’re fighting a different enemy now, they’re using everyday things like cars, they’re killing our children. 

"You have to do something, it’s not about your safety it’s about someone else's. The common man is the person who can now do something about this."

Mr Athwal, who lives in Birmingham, central England, narrowly escaped the carnage in Las Ramblas last Thursday when he decided to try the food in an upstairs café.
