Police in the US have released a distressing call to 911 in which a man informs the operator he has just killed his twin daughters and will momentarily shoot himself.

Randall Coffland, 48, calmly informed a Chicago 911 operator on Friday of the events surrounding the deaths of his daughters and shooting of his wife.

"I just shot and killed my two kids, and I shot my wife," he said, after telling the operator his address.

"I’m going to kill myself now."

"I’m going to kill myself now," he repeated.

"Sir, sir, sir, sir. Sir, stay on the line with me. Sir... Sir?" the 911 operator said, immediately prior to the call ending.

Prior to him phoning 911, Anjum Coffland, 46, arrived at her husband's home.

Coffland told his wife their daughters were dead and then shot her in the leg.

She, too, phoned 911.

"Oh my god! My husband shot my kids," she told the operator.

The operator kept Mrs Coffland on the phone until police and paramedics arrived.

Her call lasted approximately seven minutes.

It is unknown why Coffland killed his daughters.

Mrs Coffland is in hospital in a stable condition.
