A UK comedian who claimed to find himself at a shopping centre without spare change has employed an unusual method to unlock a coin-operated trolley, turning to the snacks he had at hand in a MacGyver-style hack.

Joe Heenan shared a video of the surprisingly successful technique on Twitter Friday, which has since been retweeted more than 3000 times.

The short clip shows him inserting a white chocolate button into the coin slot of a trolley, and pushing it closed to successfully unlock the trolley from its chain.

"Couldn't find a pound coin for the trolley so I used a Milky Bar Button instead. I'm a genius," he wrote.

Mr Heenan has faced some criticism, with some users questioning whether the chocolate was simply glued to a coin.

Others praised his resourcefulness, despite it very likely being against shopping centre policy.

"You're the everyman's MacGyver," Kat Meringue wrote.

It's not the first time one of Mr Heenan's pranks has gone viral – a clip of his children excitedly opening an iPad box only to realise it was empty was widely shared on April Fools Day.
