Man given $5k for returning bag full of money

An American man has been given a US$5000 ($6500) reward after he returned a bag containing an estimated US$250,000.

Dan Kennedy, 57, from Salt Lake City, Utah, was driving to work on March 31 when the back door of an armoured truck ahead swung open and a big orange bag flew out.

"It looked like a garbage bag," he told KSL News, recalling the moment he darted through traffic to pick it up.

But as he got closer, he saw wads of cash poking through holes in the bag as it tumbled to a stop.

Mr Kennedy said he never looked through it nor did it occur to him to keep the treasure.

Instead, he called the state highway patrol and handed over the bag.

"I still feel guilty about it, I really do. It's something that's been in my head for a while," he said.

"The money in the bag was earned by hardworking people.

"Say they earned $100 a day; that's 50 peoples' hard-earned money. What did I do to deserve 50 peoples' hard-earned effort?"

In return for his honesty, Brink's, the company who owned the truck, gifted him a US$5000.

It is estimated the bag contained a quarter of a million dollars.

Mr Kennedy has been inundated with messages since news of his good deed broke, with many people telling him they would not have returned the money.

But he isn't so sure.

"Maybe it would take them a few more minutes to decide than I did … People say take the money and do something with it, but you can't," he said.

"It's not real money and prison is full of people who thought they could get away with it."
