Man films avalanche engulfing climbers

Powered by

A climber has shared terrifying video of a team of adventurers being buried by an avalanche on a deadly mountain peak in Kyrgyzstan.

The video, which was filmed in July but has only now been made public, shows eight climbers attempting their ascent of Lenin Peak. Suddenly, there is a loud rumble and a tidal wave of snow begins its cascade down the mountainside.

Lenin Peak is the same site where tragedy struck in 1990 during an avalanche that killed more than 40 climbers at Base Camp 2.

In the footage, which was filmed by Magnus Lindkvist from Sweden, the climbers can be seen in the distance trying futilely to flee the avalanche as it engulfs them.

All eight - six from Germany and two from Switzerland, survived the avalanche although they lost some equipment, Mr Lindkvist said.

According to Mr Lindkvist, the eight abandoned their ascent of Lenin Peak, which reaches 7,134m above sea level, and continued their journey at a lower altitude.
