‘We will not be governed by fear’: Lena Dunham writes personal message to Hillary Clinton

Actor Lena Dunham has penned a powerful essay supporting Hillary Clinton in the wake of a Donald Trump’s election win.

Dunham, creator of popular HBO series Girls, spent eighteen months on the Democratic campaign trail, fervently supporting Mrs Clinton in the flesh and on social media.

“Heartbroken” by the reality of Donald Trump as the chosen president-elect, Dunham took to her website, Lenny, to write a personal message, “Don’t Agonise, Organise”, about her views on the presidential election.

She recalled, with a tinge of “embarrassment”, waking up on election day “like a bride… rosy, thrilled, a little controlling about just how MY perfect day would be spent”.

A Trump presidency, in Dunham’s view, was “impossible”.

“Because as horrifying as I found Donald Trump's rhetoric, as hideous as I found his racism and xenophobia…I never truly believed he could win,” Dunham wrote.

She then transports the reader to her surreal experience inside Clinton HQ at the Javitas Centre, New York City, on Tuesday night.

“The three hours… are blurred and spotty… it became clear something had gone horribly wrong,” she wrote.

“It wasn’t supposed to go this way… she worked her whole life for the job. It’s her job.”

Dunham dubbed Wednesday until Sunday as a period of “mourning”, before changing her tone to one of empowerment.

“Then we fight. Now, more than ever, our power is in numbers and in our refusal to accept the idea that our leaders intrinsically know what’s best for us,” she said.

She concluded the essay with a personal thanks to Clinton, and a rousing “call to arms”.

“The work isn’t done. It is only beginning,” she proclaimed.

“We will not be governed by fear. We will show our children a different way. We will go home like shooting stars.”
