Demonstrator dies in Kurdish protest against Iraq

One person was reportedly killed and at least three wounded when Iraqi security forces fired on Kurdish demonstrators protesting against Iraq's occupation of disputed territory.

Video of the incident yesterday in the Iraqi city of Khanaqin, near the Iranian border, showed demonstrators waving Kurdish flags and protesting against the presence of Iraqi troops and militia fighters backed by Iran.

In footage, the gathering becomes increasingly rowdy and protesters can be heard chanting: "Get out".

But moments later gunfire can be heard and the demonstrators turn and run before the person filming falls to the ground, apparently hit by a bullet.

Kurdish media outlet NRT reported one person "of Kurdish origin" was killed and three wounded.

The incident comes just days after Iraqi government forces moved into the disputed Kirkuk province and its prized oil fields.

It has sparked fear conflict could break out between two of the West's main allies in the fight against Islamic State.

The US military is declining to blame the Iraqi government for seizing Kirkuk, and instead is urging the central government in Baghdad and the Kurdish authorities to negotiate their differences.
