Killer whales crash surfing competition

A pair of killer whales have made a surprise appearance at a surfing event, shocking competitors.

Video shared to social media shows the whales gliding into the contest area at Norway’s Lofoten Masters yesterday, as a number of surfers battled it out in the semi-finals.

“It looks like the whales have entered the contest,” a shocked commentator can be heard announcing.

“We have two killer whales in the contest area now…I wonder how the judges are scoring that,” he adds.

The majority of the competitors left the water after the sighting, but two participants stayed out.

The Lofoten Masters was first held in 2007, and has since become a fixture on the international competitive surfing calendar. It’s widely known as the “Arctic aloha”.

Professional surf instructor Edi Siswanto told Al Jazeera that despite Europe not being known for its great surf, conditions in Norway were “as good as Bali”.

“There’s no risk of shark attacks…you’re more likely to  be watching sea eagles and seals as you wait for the wave to ride," Mr Siswanto told the news service.
