Rescuers have been left dumbfounded over the discovery of Texan pit bull who managed to overcome the odds, despite being subjected to a brutal knife attack and a deliberately lit blaze.
Khaleesi, named after Daenerys Targaryen – a character from the popular HBO TV show Game of Thrones, famed for her miraculous emergence from fire – was discovered at the sight of a house fire in Dallas, Texas on January 13.
Firefighters say they had only just extinguished the blaze when the badly injured dog appeared, laying at their feet.
Khaleesi, whose throat had been cut in two places, was immediately rushed to the vet, where she underwent three hours of emergency surgery in order to repair the damage.
She is now recovering in the care of local shelter organisation, DFW Rescue Me.
Firefighter Joseph Nguyen was among those on the scene who helped organise Khaleesi’s rescue.
“I was heartbroken. I’ve never seen something like that before,” he told NBC DFW.
Witnesses claim to have seen someone spreading gasoline around the property prior to the blaze.
It is not yet known whether the purported arsonist was also responsible for attacking Khaleesi.
No arrests have been made yet, with police set to continue their investigations.
