Journalist gunned down during Facebook Live

A journalist in Nicaragua has been gunned down while reporting on the Central American country’s anti-government protests.

Angel Gahona was broadcasting a Facebook Live video on the streets of the coastal town of Bluefield overnight when a bullet struck him, causing him to collapse on the pavement. He died of his injuries.

In the night-time video, Gahona can be heard narrating the scenes around him as he approaches the frontage of a bullet ridden ATM and local bank.

Seconds later, the sound of a gunshot rings out with the reporter gasping before the reporter and his camera crash to the ground. It is not clear who shot Gahona or why he was a target.

At least 10 people have died in a series of protests against pension changes since last Wednesday, the BBC reports.

The BBC claims one human rights group alleges the protest death toll was more than 25.

Pope Francis has weighed in to attempt to stem the bloodshed, calling for an end to the violence.

Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega reportedly approved the changes to pensions that will see contributions for workers and employee increased while overall benefits will be cut by five percent.
