'Jordan's response will be earth-shattering': Failed female suicide bomber to be executed at dawn in retaliation against ISIL

Jordan will execute an Iraqi woman on death row over a failed bombing after having vowed to avenge the murder of a Jordanian pilot by Islamic State jihadists, an official said.

"The sentence of death pending on... Iraqi Sajida al-Rishawi will be carried out at dawn," the security official said on Tuesday, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Later a military spokesman released a televised statement saying the death of the captive pilot Mu'ath al-Kasasbeh "would not be in vain".

"And our vengeance will be on the scale of the sorrow that has struck all Jordanians," the spokesman said.

Jordanian authorities are reportedly planning to execute five other al-Qaeda operatives being held along with al-Rishawi.

Jordan's military said al-Kasasbeh had been killed on January 3 despite its efforts to "liberate him from the forces of darkness and evil".

Authorities had attempted to bargain with ISIL in an effort to free the captured pilot but negotiations soon broke down.

Rishawi, the would-be suicide bomber, was condemned to death for her participation in deadly attacks in Amman in 2005, and IS had offered to spare the life of the Jordanian fighter pilot, Lieutenant Maaz al-Kassasbeh, if she were released.

"Jordan's response will be earth-shattering," Information Minister Mohammed Momani said earlier on television, while the army and government vowed to avenge the pilot's murder.
