US President Donald Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser, Jared Kushner, has come under scrutiny in the Russia investigation, NBC News reports.

Authorities reportedly believe Mr Kushner, who held a series of meetings in December with the Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak, has "significant information" relevant to their investigation.

NBC News said this does not mean Mr Kushner is suspected of committing a crime or that authorities intend on charging him.

Earlier last week, The Washington Post reported a senior White House staff member was a "person of interest" in the Russia probe but did not name the person.

It is not known whether Mr Kushner has received any requests from the FBI for records, NBC News said.

Mr Kushner, who is estimated to be worth $1.8 billion, is married to Mr Trump's daughter Ivanka.
