For the many Irish expats who call Australia home, it's a long way back to the Emerald Isle.

But Stephen Nolan wanted to surprise his mother back in the small town of Rush on Ireland's east coast.

"Unfortunately I'm not going to make it home for the wedding. But if I start swimming now I'll get there on time," he said in a video as he dived into the waters off an Australian beach.

Sitting in a car on Ireland's rainy coast, Mr Nolan's mother watched the video with his sister, Nicola.

"Look, look," Nicola said to her mother as someone started to walk out of the frigid waters of the Irish Sea.

"Wouldn't that be amazing? Wouldn't it?" Mrs Nolan asked her daughter before she puts on her glasses to see if her eyes are deceiving her.

"Don't make a fool of me," she said as she gets out of the car and runs down to the windswept beach to see that it was indeed her son Stephen coming out of the sea.
