A sickening video has emerged showing an Indian man walking down a busy street on Friday carrying the severed head of his wife in his hand.

Ramchandra Sheu Chavan, 63, was filmed walking for about 500m down a street in Pune, south of Mumbai with an axe in one hand and the head in another.

After being persuaded by police who began walking beside him, Chavan threw the axe and his wife's head into traffic and surrendered, the Times of India reports.

Deputy police commissioner Sudhakar Pathare said Chavan suspected his wife was being unfaithful to him.

"On Friday morning, after their sons Rajesh and Umesh had left home for work, there were heated arguments between Chavan and his wife," he said.

"Chavan locked his daughter-in-law Sunita in a room and proceeded to attack (his wife) Sonabai with an axe.

"He beheaded her and chopped off her arms and legs."

Police said Chavan was planning on dumping the head and the axe into a nearby lake.

They said he did not resist or show any remorse.

He has now been charged with murder.
