Nearly 40 people injured by rampaging jackal in India
Nearly 40 people were injured by a rampaging jackal before the animal was finally put down in the Katihar district of India.
The jackal attacked five villages yesterday morning, leaving eight with serious wounds, the Hindustan Times has reported.
Children were among the victims.

"We were working on our farm when the animal attacked and bit us," Afsar Alam, a resident of Jamira village, said.
"The attack was sudden and we were left helpless."
Another victim, from Picchwa village, said he had been on his way to his paddy field when the jackal attacked.
The animal was killed by locals.

Jackal attacks have recently taken place elsewhere in India, with the wild animals raiding one village three times in one week.
Experts believe the animals could be driven closer to human settlements by habitat destruction.
It is very rare for jackals to treat humans as prey.
