Iceberg nearly twice the size of Adelaide drifting out to sea

Satellite images have shown how a massive iceberg has started to drift out to sea after breaking off from Antarctica.

The A68 berg broke off from the Larsen C ice shelf on July 12.

The vast slab of ice is nearly twice the size of Adelaide and satellite imagery shows it is on the move.

A68 is one of the largest icebergs known, it's about 5,800 sq km and weighs about a trillion tonnes.

However, it is only about half the size of the record-holder berg which broke off the Ross Ice Shelf in 2000.

A Netherlands professor shared some of the latest satellite images to Twitter.

With the iceberg now on the move, there is concern it could break up into smaller pieces and drift into shipping lanes.

While some may use the break away as evidence of climate change, scientists have denied this is the case and rather, it was a "normal" calving event.
