How does a new royal baby change the succession to the throne?

The announcement the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are expecting their third child brought not only joy, but also changes to who is next in line to the throne.

William and Kate’s third child, boy or girl, will become the fifth in line to rule the Royal Family.

Queen Elizabeth II, 91, currently reigns and has done since for the past 60 years, making her the longest-reigning Monarch in British history.

While she is in relatively good health for her 91 years, some of her formal duties have been passed down to other members of the Royal Family.

Prince Charles

First in line to the throne is the Queen’s eldest son, Prince Charles.

He married Lady Diana Spencer in 1981 and the pair had two sons, William and Harry.

They separated and divorced in 1996, and the Princess was killed in a car crash in Paris 20 years ago.

Prince Charles married Camilla Parker Bowles in 2005.

Duke of Cambridge

As the eldest son of Prince Charles and Diana, Prince William is second in line to the throne.

He was 15 years old when his mother was killed. He married Kate Middleton in 2011 after meeting her at university.

Prince George of Cambridge

Prince George is a royal favourite the world over.

He was born in 2013 and is due to start primary school this week. He is third in line to the throne.

Princess Charlotte of Cambridge

The adorable Princess Charlotte is two years old, born in May 2015.

She has already accompanied her parents on a Royal tour this year and is fourth in line to the throne.

New baby Cambridge

The third child of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will become fifth in line to the throne when he or she is born.

The Royal Family has not yet confirmed when Kate is due, however she is expected to be less than 12 weeks along in her pregnancy.

Prince Harry

The birth of his nephew and niece, and the news of a third, is on the way puts Prince Harry at sixth in line to the throne.

The 32-year-old served as helicopter pilot in the British Army for 10 years and now focuses on charitable work.

Prince Andrew, Duke of York

Prince Andrew is the third child of the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh.

He had two daughters with Sarah Ferguson, Beatrice and Eugenie, before divorcing in 1996. He is seventh in line to the throne.
