The gunman at the centre of a new siege in Paris has been arrested after his two hostages were freed.

The gunman was believed to be armed with a Kalashnikov rifle and grenades.

However, there was no shooting and nobody was hurt in the incident.

He is understood to have called the police himself and was speaking incoherently.

Police surrounded the area and awaited negotiators before the man was convinced to surrender.

French media reported the gunman was known to police as a suspect in previous petty crimes.

However, there is no known link to the terrorist attacks last week in Paris that left 17 people dead.
