A heterosexual Russian couple has raised eyebrows after tying the knot with bride and groom both dressed in wedding gowns.

Those at the registry at first thought two women were walking down the aisle but on closer inspection discovered that the couple, Alina Davis, 23 and Alison Brooks, 19, were in fact a man and a woman.

Ms Davis, whose real name is Dmitry Kozhukhov, identifies as a heterosexual man who prefers to dress as a woman.

Their marriage almost didn't take place due to Russia's conservative marriage laws.

"In May, we filled in the application at the registry office and our appearance did not cause any questions at all, which surprised us," Ms Davis told The Huffington Post.

But the understanding was short lived, with Ms Davis saying the registry office was "outraged" when they both showed up dressed as brides.

"I have written to couples who are planning similar marriages and are afraid of failures with registration: "Be aware, you cannot be refused'," Ms Davis said.

Ms Davis believes her wedding will provide a precedent for other couples in Russia.

"I believe that we have created an important precedent for such a wedding in Russia, for we are not alone in having such problems," Ms Davis said.

"After all, girls are the fairer sex. They are beautiful. So if a guy looks like a girl - it's wonderful."
