Hand luggage bursts into flames on plane

A dramatic fire broke out on board a plane bound for Shanghai from a passenger’s hand luggage.

Passengers were boarding a China Southern Airlines flight from Guangzhou yesterday when smoke began to fill the cabin and a bag burst into flames in an overhead compartment, according to Channel News Asia.

Video posted to social media shows a flight attendant and a passenger leaping into action, using bottles of water and juice to douse the flames.

The airline said in a statement that fire crews and security came on board and put out the blaze. 

There are reports the cause of the fire was a power bank, with preliminary investigations showing it was not in use at the time.

It took three hours for a replacement aircraft to safely take passengers to Shanghai.
