A mysterious purple blob has been discovered by marine researchers at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean off the Californian coast.

Research scientists on-board The Nautilus were scouring the ocean floor for tectonically active areas when they spotted a light-emitting orb.

A robot equipped with a camera and green lasers was sent down to the seabed to investigate.

A curious crab can be seen hovering near the iridescent purple blob, kicking up sand with its long claws.

The inquisitive scientists can be heard guessing the identity of the “teeny-tiny purple” elusive creature.

“I’m stumped,” a voice can be heard saying.

“It looks like a disco ball.”

Scientists used the “arms” of the underwater robot to prod and poke the “squishy” specimen.

It was later reportedly brought on to the ship for further investigation.

The Nautilus crew have been exploring the Pacific Ocean for the last four months.

Scientists also hope the exploration improves the understanding of biological ecosystems in the area.
