Giant 'fatberg' causes mayhem in Welsh town

A giant deposit of fat nearly a metre tall is causing a stink in a Welsh town after it was found to be clogging up a sewer.

Staff from utility firm Dwr Cymru Welsh Water found the "fatberg" while attempting to clear a blockage under Mill Lane in Cardiff, The Telegraph reports.

Cardiff authorities believe the disgusting obstruction was caused by a mixture of cooking fats and oils, which were made even worse by wipes and other sanitary products collecting behind it.

Steve Wilson from Dwr Cymru Welsh Water is spearheading a new awareness campaign called Let's Stop The Block, and said blocked sewers were costing British taxpayers nearly $14 million a year to clear.

The nauseating discovery comes almost six months after a "fatberg" the size of a 747 jet was found under a road in west London.

"Most of the blockages we deal with are caused by everyday items put down the toilet, such as wipes, sanitary towels, cotton buds and dental floss, as well as fat, oil and grease that people have put down their drains," Mr Wilson said.

"It doesn't take much for any of these to cause flooding to a home."
