'Free meal' customer racks up $1340 bill at top London restaurant

A UK woman has taken her car dealership for a $1340 ride after they offered her a free meal for two in compensation for damaging her car.

Siobhan Yap, 27, from Hertfordshire, graciously accepted the all expenses paid offer after her Audi A3 convertible was damaged by a delivery vehicle while parked on Watford Audi's forecourt, BBC reports.

Only, Ms Yap's venue of choice was L'Atelier de Joel Robuchon in Covent Garden – a celebrated Michelin-starred London restaurant, where she and her mother racked up the four-figure bill.

According to the receipt, the pair enjoyed four glasses of champagne, two bottles of wine priced at $130 each, six cocktails totalling $165 and a sloe gin.

The "small tasting dishes" of choice included one La Truffe Noire at $67, two St Jacques scallop dishes at $55 each and two La Volatille risottos, $80.

A Watford Audi spokesman said it was "excessive expenditure for two dinners", but keen to make amends for the mishap, agreed to cover half of the bill.

"We believe this is a fair and reasonable amount given the circumstances, and we stand by the decision taken," the spokesman said.

Speaking on BBC radio, an unimpressed Ms Yap said Audi should foot the total sum because she had to send her car - which she had bought second-hand for $38,000 - back for further repairs, and the cost was "relative to what they put me through and their customer service levels".

"They put me through a lot of stress and it was a really nice restaurant," Ms Yap said.

"They should have specified a limit."
