Former US President Jimmy Carter says he has cancer

Former US President Jimmy Carter has announced that his recent liver surgery revealed he has cancer.

The 39th president recently underwent surgery to remove a small mass from his liver.

"That procedure revealed that I have cancer that now is in other parts of my body. I will be rearranging my schedule as necessary so I can undergo treatment," he said, in a brief statement.

The 90-year-old served as the 39th President of the United States from 1977 to 1981.
