Former US nurse turns her home into a hospice for terminally ill babies

A former nurse and a mum-of-eight has turned her own home into a hospice for terminally ill babies and toddlers, to provide comfort in the final days of their tragically short lives.

Cori Salchert and her husband Mark have opened up their house in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, to care for the bubs whose parents have often given up guardianship.

Mrs Salchert had the idea during her years as a nurse and perinatal bereavement specialist.

“There was no judgement on my part that the parents should just be able to deal with the circumstances, but I thought, ‘Wow, I would really like to take those kiddos and care for them’”, she told the Sheboygan Press.

The pair are technically foster parents to the young ones in their care, and Mrs Salchert said she’d had to overcome the fear of operating complex medical machinery some of the bubs rely on.

“It’s okay to be afraid, but never let fear cripple your life,” she said.
