A Macedonian football fan has lost a hand after a catching a stun grenade that riot police fired into the crowd.

The man was attending a fiercely-contested Bitola derby between Vardar and Pelister when police hemmed in the visiting Vardar fans, leading to a confrontation.

When police threw the grenade into the crowd, the man picked up the weapon, but it exploded as he did so, blowing his hand to shreds.

Graphic video of his bloodied and mangled hand emerged in the days after the match.

Despite the extent of his injuries, the man is apparently not in a great deal of pain, and even continues to use his phone with his other hand in the footage.

The incident is being investigated by the Macedonian Interior Ministry.

Vardar won the match 1-0, but their manager said that, "this win means nothing when a fan loses a hand".
