Fatberg the size of a jumbo jet lurks beneath London

What's bigger than a jumbo jet, smells terrible and has been flooding homes in west London for months?

This god-awful thing, which has been christened a "fatberg". After you see how truly disgusting it is you'll think twice about pouring cooking oil down your sink.

How do authorities deal with such things? Well, the Thames Water worker in this 2013 video, who we suspect has seen more horrible sewer-cloggings than you can possible think of, pokes a fatberg casually with a shovel and even (somehow) handles one of the lard monstrosities with his bare hands.

Sewer manager Dave Dennis said workers had found all sorts of objects in the sewers - from tennis balls to planks of wood. But fatbergs proved the most costly to fix.

"We spend £12 million a year tackling blockages, most of them formed because people have tipped cooking fats down the drain and wet wipes down the loo," he said.

"Wet wipes cling to the fat. Fat clings to the wipes. And pretty soon your fatberg is out of control and sewage is backing up into roads, gardens and in the worst cases flooding up through toilets and into homes.

The latest hellish coagulation is larger than a 747, and authorities are struggling to break it up. So if anyone has an oil tanker full of high-grade detergent or draino, now would be the time to speak up.
