Drunk Darwin man swallows entire beer bottle

A Darwin man chewed and swallowed a whole glass beer bottle at a family gathering last night, police say.

The intoxicated 38-year-old was rushed to hospital after relatives called police, the NT News reports.

The man had chewed and swallowed a lot of glass “and then went for a lie down”, Superintendent Louise Jorgensen told the newspaper.

“His family then called police and St John, and he was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital,” she said.

The emergency call was one of 500 made to police from 3pm to 11pm on Wednesday, Superintendent Jorgensen said, adding it was frustrating for police to have to deal with such stupidity.

“People are dismayed when we can’t respond to their jobs immediately, but this is why — because of all these other jobs that are coming in.

“General duties police are run off their feet by anti-social behaviour and Alice Springs is in a similar position.”
