Drone racing league takes flight

The drone craze has reached new heights with the formation of a specialised racing league.

Equipped with video goggles, precision controllers and custom made drones, a group of pilots have found a new use for the quad engine machines with the formation of the Drone Racing League (DRL).

Capable of reaching speeds of more than 100km/h the specially designed drones being entered into the league have been built to outperform almost anything currently available on the market.

The DRL's custom-built drones have both standard and HD cameras and feature coloured LED lights making them visible when moving at high speeds.

The league currently has 17 pilots registered who will take part in six races across the US from February 22.

However it's not just the US that gone drone crazy with reports showing a rise in users throughout Australia.

Business Insider Australia predicts the market for commercial and civilian drones will grow at a compound annual rate of 19 per cent between 2015 and 2020.
