Donald Trump's surprising exchange with Ukrainian reporter at NATO press conference: 'Very upsetting'

One day after dropping an F-bomb on camera, Donald Trump took a very different approach to an interaction with a Ukrainian reporter at a NATO press conference.

The US president called on BBC Ukrainian Service reporter Myroslava Petsa at the NATO summit in The Hague, Netherlands.

She asked if the US is ready to sell Patriot missile defence systems to Ukraine as Russia continues to "pound Ukraine really heavily".

Trump responded by asking Petsa if she lives in Ukraine, to which she responded that her husband does.

"My husband is there and me, with the kids, I'm in Warsaw [Poland] at the moment," she told him.

When Trump asked if her husband is a Ukrainian soldier, she confirmed that he is.

"Wow, that's rough stuff, right?" the US president responded.

He went on to say that the US plans to "see if we can make some [Patriot missile defence systems] available" to Ukraine.

"They're very hard to get, we need them too. We were supplying them to Israel and they're very effective, 100 per cent effective, hard to believe how effective," he said.

Trump praised Petsa for what he called a "very good question" before wishing her luck.

"I wish you a lot of luck, I mean, I can see this is very upsetting to you and say hello to your husband," he said.

The interaction took place shortly after NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte referred to the US president as "daddy" during a joint press conference.

When asked for his thoughts on Trump's recent comment that Israel and Iran "don't know what the f--- they're doing", Rutte responded: "Daddy has to sometimes use strong language."

His comment was lighthearted but raised eyebrows around the globe.
